When I was a Rheumatology fellow, I was lucky to have two different chiefs of Rheumatology. One of the chiefs believed strongly in evidence based medicine and the other emphasized experience based medicine. I try to combine the teachings of both of these grandmasters of Rheumatology.

If you are a patient and think you may have an inflammatory arthritis, or even a physician evaluating the patients, there are clinical criteria for many conditions that could be used to help determine the diagnosis, and help determine the etiology of pain.

However, please keep in mind. These criteria are evidence-based, and sometimes you do need a touch of experience based medicine to apply these criteria to an individual.
